The Boy Who Talks To Stars

It was from humble means he came,
Tousled hair and dimpled cheek.
Lucas was his given name.
From the word for “light” in Greek.

Even as a baby,
He seemed thoughtful and aware,
— A little soulful, maybe,
One eye hidden by his hair.

From his papa’s lap one night,
He reached up for the skies.
His face was lit with pure delight.
Stars twinkled in his eyes.

If you traced the child’s gaze,
— A mystery to explore —
You would find a star ablaze,
A little brighter than before.

The moment passed without fanfare,
As moments often do,
But something special happened there,
That changed him through and through.

A sense of wonder, hope and joy,
Who knew from where or when,
Passed between the star and boy
Then back to star again.

From that night forward he was drawn
To the twinkling overhead,
Until blurry eyes and a gaping yawn,
Sent the tired boy to bed.

He’d wait as dusk dissolved to dark,
To search for flecks afar.
And one night, quite on a lark,
He started taking to a star.

At first it was just a greeting,
Each night he went outside.
His heart nearly stopped beating,
The night a star replied.

He spoke to stars sincerely
Of things that made him sigh.
They helped him see more clearly
From their vantage point on high.

Mostly he loved to listen
To the stories stars would tell.
They made his deep eyes glisten,
And his imagination swell.

There were evenings they enchanted,
And sailors that they guided,
Wishes that they granted
And romance they provided.

There was the story of the sacred day
They were humbled and beguiled,
To lead frightened shepherds on their way
To meet a holy child.

After the star’s stories ended,
He’d sit still in the warmth of their glow.
The sight was so magic and splendid,
He decided they needed to know.

“I wish you could see what I see —
Like jewels, you’re truly entrancing.
You light nights and hearts with glee,
As you send your starlight dancing.

“We wish,” the stars replied,
“You saw what we see, dear one.
You too have a great light inside.
It shines like your own inner sun.”

“It may sound odd, but it’s true
— Ask any star in the heavens above —
We reflect the light we see in you.
That’s the purest form of love.”

“When you see a star shine bright,
It’s mirroring a beam from below.
If people could see each other’s light,
It would set your whole world aglow.”

That thought hit the boy like a spark.
It lit up his heart and his face,
As he imagined the chance to embark,
On a world that’s a gentler place.

Right then, Lucas vowed to be kinder,
To reflect others’ light and their worth,
And with stars as his constant reminder,
To bring a little more heaven to earth.
