The Magic Of Holiday Spirit

Everyone knows there is magic involved
In creating holiday cheer.
There are elf-crafted toys
For good girls and boys,
And a sleigh led by flying reindeer.

It makes for a magical season!
And where does that alchemy start?
With a spry little elf
Who loves Christmas himself
And carries that love in his heart.

The name of the elf is Spirit,
For that’s the sort of magic he lends.
Each year he plants
Magic seeds he enchants
With Hope and Kindness – his friends.

The magic moves all that it touches
As the spirit seeds start to grow.
Then you feel and hear it –
That holiday spirit –
The kind we’ve all come to know.

But this year something was different.
Not one magic seed had been sown.
Spirit wasn’t inspired
He was dreary and tired.
He just wanted to be left alone.

Though it was coming on early December,
Poor Spirit just didn’t feel chipper.
He spent most nights and days
In his reindeer PJs,
With his blanket and pointy-toe slippers.

One day came a sharp knock-knock-knocking
That startled him out of his fog.
Hope and Kindness had come
To visit their chum
And bring him a wreath and eggnog.

They were worried the season was passing,
And Spirit was not to be found.
Without his magic ways
Holidays were just days.
They hoped they could bring him around.

“There are no twinkle lights!” Hope told him.
“Christmas stockings haven’t been hung.
We don’t have candy cane swirls
For good boys and girls,
And Christmas carols have yet to be sung.”

“You don’t know how much you are missed
Or the difference you make,” Kindness said.
“I speak for the rest,
You bring out our best,”
Added Hope. Kindness nodded her head.

Spirit’s eyes teared up as he listened,
He feared it was much too late to begin.
“Just do what you can,
My little elf man,”
Said Hope, “We can’t let Fear win!”

With that Spirit sprung from the sofa,
Fixed on good friends and good deeds.
He put on his suit,
And each red spirit boot,
And grabbed his knapsack of magical seeds.

Kindness and Hope went with him.
They ran the first forty blocks.
He made only one stop,
Near a favorite toy shop,
To pull up his striped spirit socks.

Together they planted the magic seeds
And were stunned as they started to flower.
When love shines through
The work that you do,
It carries astonishing power.

Soon the wonder of holiday spirit glowed
From each home and window and face.
Christmas tree lights
Lit up the night,
And the three friends joined in embrace.

With the help of Hope and Kindness,
Who are loving and loyal and dear,
Spirit once again
Had ushered in
The most magical time of the year.

He hadn’t done it all on his own –
And for a time he had put on the breaks.
But his friends helped to show,
What the elf didn’t know –
The amazing difference he makes.
