Traveling With Age

Age is an elegant angel.
Her shimmering figure is slight.
Her ways are both earnest and gracious.
Her hair is the shade of starlight.

She, herself, is quite ageless,
The daughter of old Father Time.
When she speaks her voice is a whisper,
And her words, they quite often rhyme.

She travels beside every person
As a teacher, observer and friend.
She loyally stays at their side
‘Till their journey comes to an end.

Often she carries a candle
For when people get in a dark place.
As everyone’s life-long companion
She brings growth and wisdom and grace.

Age puts her heart in her service.
She tries always to be of good cheer.
But despite her good work and intention
She often meets with resistance and fear.

People are frightened of aging
And everything that it implies.
Age pretends that doesn’t upset her,
But it shows in the hurt in her eyes.

Truth is, Age felt quite disheartened,
Her mind began filling with doubt.
She felt disliked and rejected
By the people she hoped to help out.

One day she could no longer face it.
She felt helpless and hopeless and down.
Age spent the whole day in her bedroom,
In a robe and her silk dressing gown.

Her friend Change tried to console her.
“They simply don’t see all you give.”
The he whispered with a note of awe,
“You help people remember to live.”

“With you, people see what’s important
And set timelines for following through.
If they had forever to do it,
It may take them forever to do.”

“Without brackets of age and time,
Life would be taken for granted:
Your loved ones may feel less cherished;
Enchantment may seem less enchanted.”

“People fear what they don’t understand.
Just remember that truth, oh my dear.
The best you can do is to love them —
Love is the only true cure for fear.”

Age nervously felt for the hourglass
She wore round her neck on a chain.
She knew that sweet Change had it right.
And she knew he shared in her pain.

She pulled herself up and together
And returned to the people on earth,
With her hourglass to remind her
How much living life fully is worth.

When you feel like you don’t fit in,
That you’re too young or too old to pass,
Know Age is walking beside you
With her candle and hourglass.

It’s true. Every age has its gifts.
They’re not ours to own, but to lease,
From innocence, vigor and beauty
To fulfillment and wisdom and peace.

Every grain of sand is a treasure,
Every day an adventure to take.
Relish the journey through every age!
You’ll love the life that you make.
